Information About the Orange County Area

the County:

Orange County is in the north-central sector of North Carolina. It covers 398 square miles. The county seat is located at Hillsborough. The county is adjacent to Durham, and contains Chapel Hill which is best known for the University of North Carolina. Orange County is to the east of Alamance County.

Cities and Towns:

Orange County is home to Hillsborough, the county seat. It is located in the center of Orange County on the banks of the Eno River, and near the intersection of I-85 and I-40. Hillsborough has been the center of many events of historical importance, a fact which is reflected by the existence of over 100 buildings dating from the 18th and early 19th centuries.

Carrboro and Chapel Hill are two towns which have grown together and share borders. Carrboro was originally established in 1882 when Southern Railroad created a rail extension to accommodate the travelling requirements of the students of UNC at Chapel Hill. It grew at the turn of the century into a textile mill town, until the mills closed during the Depression. Carrboro slowly became the home to employees and students of UNC.

Chapel Hill grew around its university, which was founded in 1793. Its residents are considered among the most educated in the entire country, with more than 70% possessing college degrees!
